One aspect of camping that most people don't give a lot of thought to is finding a good campsite. If you're camping in a prepared campground this won't be much of an issue, but a lot of people like to camp out in the woods, and finding a good spot to camp in is definitely an issue. Let's take a look at what sorts of things you should look for.

The most obvious thing to look for in a camping spot is level ground. The size of your campsite will depend on several things - most importantly, how many people are camping with you - but shoot for an area that is 15 to 20 yards square. If the area is at least somewhat clear - no big trees or bushes in the way - then that's even better.

If the area you're looking at isn't totally clear, that's OK. You'll probably never find a spot that doesn't have anything in the way, but look around for a while until you find something good. While you're looking, keep an eye out for level ground as well. Camping on a steep incline doesn't work too well and isn't a whole lot of fun.

A handy trick for spotting a good campsite is looking for fire rings that other people have used. If someone else has already built a fire in that spot, chances are good that they were able to camp there. On top of that, if you can use existing fire rings, that will lower the impact you have on the area during your trip and that's good for everyone.

One more thing to consider is what the weather forecast is going to be like for your trip. If heavy rain is expected, then you don't want to camp on low ground. You don't want to wake up in a puddle of water the next morning! If snow and wind are predicted, then camping underneath some natural shelter would be a good idea.

Another thing to keep in mind is to look out for evidence of animals or insects. Setting up camp next to a bear cave or on top of a bee's next would not be a pleasant experience. The chances of anything catastrophic happening are slim, but it's definitely something to keep in mind.

Follow these instructions well and you'll not only find a great campsite without too much trouble, but you'll be able to enjoy your trip even more.
