    • ]]>     Hiking with a light backpack is steadily increasing in popularity over the years. They put less stress on your body and results in a more comfortable and enjoyable hike. With lighter modern gear, it's so much easier to do than before.

    1. Look at your current gear
    Write down what you have and the corresponding weight. You need to weigh your gear to find the actual weight. You may find that the actual weight is not the same as what the manufacturer states. This will help you get the big picture of how much gear selection impact the weight of your backpack.

    2. Take no more than what you need
    Luxuries are allowed but don't carry unnecessary stuff that you will never use which are not related to safety. Books, sleeping pads, fishing poles, binoculars and folding camping chairs are some of the popular luxury items backpackers frequently carry. Always be on a lookout for lighter alternatives and decide if you can really go without these luxuries.

    3. Plan you gear according to the weather
    A zero degree sleeping bag won't be suitable in the summer. Your other backpacking should be right for the season as well.

    4. Select the lightest equipment
    If you can afford it, replace heavier gear with lighter ones. Try first to find lighter alternatives for your backpacking pack, sleeping bag and shelter. When choosing an ultralight backpack, make sure it can handle the whole weight of your gear.

    5. Look for items that have multiple uses.
    Your backpacking equipment should be treated as a system of components that can work together. One of the key skills in reducing your pack weight is to recognize the functional relationship between your gear or to select gear that has multiple functionalities. One common approach is to use a poncho as both raingear and shelter.

    6. Use down.
    Down is still the best insulation for sleeping bags and clothing because they're warmer and lighter than the best synthetics. However, carrying down assumes that you possess the necessary skills and attentiveness to care for it in inclement weather - down provides precious little insulating value if it gets very wet. You can save as much as 2.5 pounds if you use down sleeping bags instead of synthetics.

    7. Use a windbreaker
    Wind shirts from GoLite, Montane, Marmot, and Ibex now weigh less than 3 ounces. The three layer system has been shown to be effective in cold weather and a windbreaker makes a good outer layer because they are lightweight and you can apply a good amount of layering underneath. A windbreaker increases the comfort range of your clothing system.

    8. Sharing your camping gear
    If you're hiking with a friend, there are a lot of things you can share, for example, your camp stove and tent can be carried by one person. Be creative and find other things you can share within your group.

    9. Develop your outdoor skills
    Reducing the amount of camping gear becomes easy when you an expert in backcountry hiking and camping. Acquiring outdoor skills can help you to comfortably reduce the weight of your safety kit, food, clothing and other gear. Attending backpacking clinics, survival programs and first aid courses helps.

    10. Travel Size
    Use smaller packaging whenever possible. Get an insect repellent in smaller bottles, use travel-sized soap, shampoo and toothpaste. Bring the amount you need and not much more.

    Gradually Reducing Your Pack Weight

    Don't cut down to the bare minimum in one go but gradually reduce your pack weight over a number of hikes. Find out on a hiking trip which gear you can live without. Once you have your pack weight down, you'll be enjoying your hike a lot better.

The welcome site of the camping tent beckons you. It is time to unpack and have the packed dinner. One is looking forward to sliding into the comfortable and cozy sleeping bag that is rolled up. It gives you a satisfied feeling that there is the sleeping bag for you to slide in, zip in and drift away with the cool wind all around and millions of stars in the sky watching over you.

    It is not practical to carry with you a bed when you go camping, trekking, hiking or mountaineering. A sleeping bag is an improvised bed for you to sleep in designed to be carried by you wherever you go. It is a protective bag resembling a blanket with a zipper. It provides the softness of a bed with the soft padding. It keeps you warm with its thermal insulation. There are two types of sleeping bag. The first is the one that looks like a blanket fitted with, on one side or on both side, with a zipper. This can be folded, rolled up and bound with cords or straps and carried in your backpack. The second is the mummy bag as it resembles a mummy. It is broad on the head side and tapers as it goes to the leg side. But this cannot be folded nor can it be easily rolled. It is better stuffed into the compression sack or the stuff sack and carried in your backpack.

    There are different sleeping bags in the market which have different capacities to withstand water and come with different insulation capacities. The Marmot Hydrogen sleeping bag keeps you warm down to about 30 Fahrenheit.

    The insulation capacity, capacity to retain heat and water absorption capacity is different for different sleeping bags. Faster insulation is provided by synthetic fill sleeping bags. It also gives more warmth even when it is wet. Water is not easily absorbed. It is not possible to easily compress this sleeping bag. It takes up more space when packed into the backpack as a result. The heat retention capacity of the down fill bag is better though the insulation capacity is lower. The bag is lighter too.

After a hard day, the thought of a good night sleep to rev you up for yet another hard, but thrilling, day ahead is exciting.  The sleeping bag beckons you. There is nothing more valuable then than this humble sleeping bag.

    But does the sleeping bag that you have with you give you all that you desire? Of course, a synthetic fill bag is much cheaper than a down fill bag. It is easier to clean a synthetic bag. But it is the insulation that is critical where you are now. It is the ground on which you decide to lay down to sleep decides how much insulation you need. If it is a wooden floor, it is warmer than a cement floor which is cold. A hut or an open space brings in all the chill wind rather than a protected camping tent.

     Good insulation is offered by the synthetic bag. The insulation offered is longer than that by the down fill bags. If the weather is wet, then the insulation of down bags gets lowered. But the down fill bags are warmer than the synthetic bags. That is why the down fill bags are good during cold winters. They are better for long trips as it is lighter than the synthetic bags. The down bags are more delicate and could get damaged if you do not take good care of it. But in terms of durability the down bags are better. But the synthetic bags are less expensive than the down fill bags.

    The rectangular sleeping bag is more spacious than the mummy shaped bag. But the insulation of the mummy bags is better than the rectangle bags. While the mummy shaped bags are rolled, tied and packed into a sack, the rectangular bags can be folded and secured using straps or chords.     Choose your sleeping bag keeping the weather, the environment and the duration of your travel. Check whether it is dry or wet climate. You will not regret this.

Blankets, bed sheets and pillows have been used to make it as close to a bed as possible. But not really. These efforts gradually transformed into sleeping bags.     Sleeping bags are available in two shapes namely the rectangular sleeping bag and the mummy shaped ones. The rectangular sleeping bags are bigger resembling a folded blanket that is zipped. It has straps or cords for securing the bag once it is folded. The mummy shaped bag has a broad and open portion at the shoulder tapering down as it comes to the leg side. It is smaller but has a better heat retention capacity. It cannot be folded but has to be rolled and stuffed into a sack for it to be carried easily.     The down bags are not as good as the synthetic bags when it comes to wet conditions. The down bags are costlier but lighter. You need to know what are the conditions you will be in when you need to use a sleeping bag. Sleeping bags no doubt making your sleeping out a pleasant experience.

    • ]]>     Backpacks are generally categorized into three: frameless, external frame, and internal frame. The main purpose of a frame is to support the backpacking pack and helps to distribute the weight across your whole body, mainly on the hips so that your shoulders are not bearing all the burden.

    Frameless Backpacks

    This is the simplest and most inexpensive type of backpack you can find. The most basic design consist of one main pocket and connected to a set of shoulder straps. They are more used for general stuff rather than hiking. However, some are suitable for outdoor activities like hiking. Some more advanced versions have a suspension system like waist strap, chest strap and padded shoulders.

    External Frame Backpacks

    This is an old favorite with backpackers because of its large capacity and strong frame. The frame is very rigid and it supports a sack made of cloth or other materials.

    External frames allow for users to carry a heavier weight than a frameless pack could. It also gives the wearer more support and protection and better weight distribution. The frames have been made of wood until about the middle of the twentieth century.

    This type of backpack is not very common today and the frames are now made of lightweight metal tubes, often aluminum and sometimes titanium or scandium. A system of straps and pads keep the sack and frame from contacting the body so you get reduced sweatiness.

    It is normal practice to strap bulky items such as camping tents, sleeping bags and pads on the frame because some parts of the frame are not occupied by the backpack. The main compartment is usually small compared to internal frame backpacks to allow for these bulky items to be strapped.

    The problem with external frame backpacks is the center of gravity is very high up and away from the body resulting in instability. Keeping your balance especially when climbing up hills is not an easy task with external frame backpacks.

    Users also complain of getting bruises as a result of the uncushioned frame rubbing or hitting against the body. However, external frame backpacks are very durable.

    Internal Frame Hiking Backpacks

    Invented in 1967 by Greg Lowe, the internal frame backpack has replaced external frame backpacks as the standard pack for hikers. Greg Lowe later went on to found Lowepro, a company specializing in backpacks and other carrying solutions for various equipment.

    The frame which consists of strips of metal or plastic is integrated into the pack. A system of straps works with the frame to distribute the weight.

    An internal frame backpack is fitted closely to the body and therefore the load is more easily controlled and easily predictable. You have more freedom of movement and are ideal for scrambling over rocky surfaces and hiking uphill. However, the close fit presents another problem; poor ventilation and therefore sweatier backs.

    Unlike external frame backpacks, there are only a few (if any) lash points for your tent or sleeping bag and there is a limit to the size of whatever you want strapped to the outside of the pack. Fortunately, modern internal frame backpacks have a large capacity so that all of your gear can fit inside.

    • ]]>     We arrived at hunting camp at around 4:00 on Friday. The sun was just beginning to set to our west. The sky started to get very dark and the northwest wind began howling through the trees. We had to set up camp quickly because it was going to get dark soon and a major winter storm was brewing. My job was to pitch the camping tent while the others picked up the firewood.

    After about 20 minutes the tent was up and my friends were walking up the trail carrying armloads of firewood that they found lying on the forest floor. My friend John said that they spooked three big bucks in the valley as they walked down the hill. He said they headed straight to the east side of the forest crossing a dry dry stream. Now we knew where to start our hunt early the next morning.

    Before we could think about hunting, we had to get a fire started because the storm was on its way. We built a simple fire ring out of big rocks then built the fire and got the rest of our stuff out of the truck and put it away. As soon as we got the fire going to a roaring blaze it started to snow very hard. It was really cold out so we decided to leave the sandwiches in the picnic backpack and grill some thick strip steaks. Since John had just gotten new bbq tools, he got to do the cooking. Besides, none of us will ever complain about John’s steaks. He really is the king of the grill.

    The snow began to pile up very fast. In a little over an hour we had several inches on the ground. My new four season camping tent was holding up to the weather conditions very well. Soon the steaks were done and we could get out of the weather and enjoy our dinner. We grabbed the cooler from the back of the truck and climbed into the tent for an evening of storytelling, food and beer.

    As we ate, the snow and wind picked up even more. The tent was shaking hard but we weren't worried. I was very glad I had gotten the four season tent instead of the three season one I had been considering. If I had purchased the other tent, we would have either stayed home or we’d have been camping in the truck. A little while later the dinner and beer were just fond memories and it was time to climb into our sleeping bags and get some rest. The alarm clock was going to go off early because the hunt was at hand!
